Louisiana Through My Lens | Getting Close To God and Nature | Fort Buhlow Recreation Area in Pineville

Photos and Story By Ken Hulsey Last week, I spent a couple of days exploring the Fort Buhlow Recreation Area in Pineville, Louisiana. This park is truly a hidden gem in the central part of the state. It covers 100 acres, nestled between Lake Buhlow and the Red River. The park features a championship-caliber disc golf course, 2- and 3-mile hiking trails, two playgrounds, numerous picnic areas, and a boat launch on the river. It is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with family.

Promises Made Before God: The Power of Vows in Life and Love

Your Vow is Important: A Spiritual Reflection on Commitment Life is filled with commitments and promises, but none hold as much significance as those made before God. As emphasized in Ecclesiastes 5:4-6, making a vow to God is a sacred act that reflects our intentions and dedication. This biblical principle reminds us that while breaking a vow can lead to forgiveness, it comes with consequences that can reverberate through our lives and relationships.

Shake It Off: When Life Bites Back, God Is Still Using You | Ascend with Pastor Steve

In this message, we explore the powerful story of Paul’s shipwreck in Acts 26–28 and his unexpected experience on the island of Malta, where survival turned into attack and pain transformed into purpose. Even though we know that Sunday came and Jesus conquered death, many of us still live as if it’s Friday—caught in confusion, pain, and unanswered questions. But what if your current struggle isn’t a setback but rather a divine assignment?

From Godzilla to Star Wars: A Comic Book Journey Through the Pages of My Childhood

Written By Ken Hulsey As most of you know, I am a certified comic book enthusiast. I have been collecting comic books as a hobby since the late 1970s and have been reading them since I was a child. Like many kids of my generation, I was drawn to titles featuring my favorite cartoon characters such as The Flintstones , Bugs Bunny , and Yogi Bear . My mother would buy them for me in packs at the Pick N Save, which helped me build quite a collection. While I often got some Richie Rich and Little Lulu comics that I didn't particularly care for, back then, you learned to take the good with the bad.

However, let's take a moment to appreciate a standout album from the 1980s that perfectly combines catchy melodies with thoughtful lyrics— ABC's Lexicon of Love . It's a true treasure that deserves more attention. Hailing from Sheffield, this English pop band formed in 1980 and quickly carved out a niche for themselves with their distinctive sound, marked by lush arrangements and sophisticated songwriting.

Overcoming Fear: How Tithing Transformed My Finances and Strengthened My Relationship with God

The Journey of Faith: Embracing Challenges and Growing in Spiritual Maturity Taking that first step into an act of faith can often feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to something like tithing. For many, the idea of giving away 10% of their income can stir up feelings of reluctance and fear. I was one of those individuals, apprehensive and uncertain about the process. Yet, it was precisely this struggle that led me to a deeper understanding of faith and dependence on God.

Unraveling the Mystery: The Glowing Green Fireballs that Haunted New Mexico—Are They Alien Probes or a Government Secret?

Story By Ken Hulsey As a rational person, I can explain away most of the strange occurrences I experienced during my teenage years in Albuquerque. However, one incident still puzzles me to this day. In August 1980, my best friend, my family, and I witnessed a large, glowing green orb hovering motionless in the night sky directly over the city for over an hour before it disappeared.

Chasing Shadows of the Past: A Railroad Adventure with Kansas City Southern's Vintage F-Series Locomotives

Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey In April 2022, I received a tip from a fellow railfan on Facebook that the Kansas City Southern Executive Train would be in Baton Rouge . To my excitement, I spotted a set of vintage FP9/F9B diesel locomotives resting on a bridge over the 110 freeway while driving toward downtown. My enthusiasm for the F-series locomotives compelled me to navigate some of Louisiana's poorly designed streets (and that’s saying something) to get close to the railyard. I made my way through what felt like a jungle that belonged somewhere in Borneo, only to climb a steep hill to reach the railyard.

Bedrock City Still Lives! - Travel To The Home of The Flintstones - Valle Arizona

Story By Ken Hulsey Photos From The Raptor Ranch Website : This morning, while browsing the internet, I came across an excellent article in Route Magazine (The Official Route 66 Magazine) about the history of Bedrock City in Arizona . Built in 1971 by Woody and Francis Speckels, the park was originally an amusement park inspired by the famous Hanna-Barbera cartoon, The Flintstones. Over the decades, Bedrock City became a popular stop for families traveling between the town of Williams and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon .

The Timeless Appeal of The Pretenders' "Learning to Crawl"

For classic rock enthusiasts, the Pretenders hold a special place in the pantheon of iconic bands that shaped the soundscape of the late '70s and early '80s. Formed in March 1978, the band made an indelible mark through a blend of punk energy, rock sensibility, and poignant songwriting, primarily driven by the incomparable Chrissie Hynde. One of their standout works, "Learning to Crawl," remains a treasured album that resonates deeply with fans even decades later.

Unmasking Heroes: The Untold Stories Behind the Birth of Comic Book Legends

Written By: Terri Pressley  Where does a documentary about superheroes and comics begin? With Superman himself, of course! Superman, created in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joel Shuster, both 18 years old, combined parts of Hercules, a scientific Moses, and Jerry Siegel's confidence issues. He always had crushes on girls that didn't seem to know that he was alive, so he created a character that everyone would look up to, one that women would want and men would want to be.

Rams Unveil Underwhelming New Uniforms: Fans Left Disappointed Again!

Written By Ken Hulsey Photos From The Los Angeles Rams As a lifelong Rams fan, I, like many others, was really excited this morning for the reveal of the new uniforms for the 2026 season. The announcement that the team would be getting new uniforms and logos came shortly after the Super Bowl, and since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting the team's new look. Many fans had been calling for a return to the classic Rams uniforms from the 80s and 90s, especially since the new rebranded uniforms introduced in 2020 failed to resonate with the fanbase. Initially, it seemed like a return to the "Ferragamo/Dickerson" style uniforms was on the horizon. However, those hopes seemed dashed a couple of months ago when it was revealed that the so-called new uniforms would simply be tweaked versions of the current ones, rather than a brand-new design. Despite this, I held on to the hope that we were getting a new but retro Rams rebranding. This morning, the team unveiled the new unifor...

Just a Thought: Designed by God | Pastor Steve Smothermon

Designed by God Psalm 139 is a profound reminder of God's intimate knowledge and omnipresence in our lives. The psalm opens with a declaration of God's deep knowledge of the individual: "O Lord, you have searched me and known me." This knowledge is not just superficial awareness, but a profound, penetrating understanding of all our ways. The psalmist acknowledges that before a word is on our tongues, God knows it completely. This reveals a God who is not distant or disinterested but is deeply engaged with the intricacies of our lives, understanding our thoughts and actions better than we understand them ourselves.

Exploring Shreveport: A Photojournalist's Journey Through History and Abandonment

Story & Photos By Ken Hulsey I have to admit that Shreveport is probably my favorite city in Louisiana . The city features stunning visual contrasts, and as a photojournalist, walking around provides countless opportunities to capture thought-provoking images. I spent some time in downtown Shreveport this week and took a lot of great pictures. The area is rich with things to see, including many abandoned buildings, which can be found in every city and town in the state, as well as preserved historical landmarks and modern art and architecture.

The challenge is not in receiving power; it’s in learning how to walk in it.

Marshall Texas: A Small Town With A Lot Of History And Big Charm

Photos & Story By Ken Hulsey Last week, as I made my way back from some work in Arkansas , I decided to take a scenic route back to my hotel in Shreveport by traveling through Texas instead of retracing my steps through Arkansas and Louisiana . Along the way, I stumbled upon several charming small towns that I couldn’t help but think would make great weekend getaway destinations. One town that particularly piqued my interest was Marshall. I recalled reading about how Marshall was once the original headquarters of the Texas and Pacific Railway and that there might be a display commemorating the history of this now-defunct railroad. As a railfan, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to explore this piece of history.

Jose Tequila's in Marshall, Texas - The Best Darn Mexican Food I've Had in a Long Time!

Written By Ken Hulsey Yesterday, I traveled back to the eastern Texas town of Marshall around dinner time. Whenever I visit Texas, I always try to enjoy some Mexican food because it's generally much better than what I get back home in Louisiana . Since I wasn't familiar with the area, I turned to Google to look for nearby restaurants and check their reviews. I found one that looked great and had excellent ratings, so I entered the coordinates and headed over.

The Power of Patience: Embracing God's Timing in Your Journey

Throughout history, many have faced trials, doubts, and waiting—a feeling so common yet often so challenging. One of the most significant biblical figures who learned to navigate this turbulent journey is David , the anointed king of Israel. Though destined for greatness, David's path was fraught with obstacles, including a relentless pursuit by King Saul. His story exemplifies the intricacies of faith , patience, and God’s timing in our lives.

Our Politicians Are 'Highly Educated Stupid People' - Unpacking the Disconnect Between Leaders and the People

In recent years, many citizens have voiced frustration over the growing disconnect between elected officials and their constituents. This growing chasm raises an important question: why do politicians seem to ignore the concerns of the very people they pledge to represent? A candid examination may reveal that modern politicians, often termed "highly educated stupid people," are shaped by an educational system that cultivates uniformity over critical thought.

Echoes of a Forgotten Town: Discovering the Hidden Stories of Lecompte, Louisiana

Photos & Story By Ken Hulsey Last night, I was talking to a couple of friends from New Mexico , trying to explain what life is like in a small farming town in Central Louisiana. I discussed in depth the poverty and decay that have come to define the area. I shared how the town of Lecompte  (pronounced "le-count") was once very prosperous—a railroad town that thrived on cotton, sugar cane, and lumber. I explained how the decline in demand for those goods, combined with the construction of an interstate highway nearby that diverted tourists away from the town, ultimately sealed its fate. My friends were genuinely shocked when I mentioned that I could see about a dozen abandoned houses and stores from my front yard.

Unleash Your Spiritual Strength: Discover the Life-Changing Power of the Armor of God!

The Principles and Applications of the Armor of God The concept of the Armor of God, as presented in Ephesians 6:10-18, serves as a profound metaphor for spiritual strength and resilience. The Apostle Paul encodes a powerful message regarding the battles Christians face—not against humans but against the spiritual forces of evil. Understanding the principles behind this scripture can lead to practical applications in daily life.

The Enduring Legacy of Macross: How a Groundbreaking Series Reshaped Anime Forever!

Written By: Ken Hulsey  In 1984, the animated television series Macross soared to new heights in popularity in Japan. Never before had an animated series captivated the Japanese public like Macross. While shows like Astro Boy , Kimba , Gigantor , Mazinger , and Gundam had amassed devoted young followings, Macross transcended age, class, and gender barriers in a way no anime had before it. Songs from the series, sung by voice actress Mari Iijima as the character Lynn Minmay , were climbing the charts one after another. In fact, Lynn Minmay had become as much of a pop culture phenomenon in Japan as Madonna was in America, despite being a fictional character. Recognizing Macross' widespread popularity, directors Noboru Ishiguro and Shoji Kawamori began work on a big-screen adaptation of the series. A theatrical release would allow for higher production values, crisper animation, and a more mature storyline. The challenge would be condensing the TV series's numerous episodes and...

Remembering Terrible Tuesday: The Devastating Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak of 1979

Written By Ken Hulsey On April 10th and 11th, 1979, a confirmed 59 tornadoes ripped through Northern Texas, Oklahoma, and several nearby states. This mass outbreak of deadly storms was officially named the Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak, but for all who survived, it was known as "Terrible Tuesday." My family moved from Whittier, California , to the farming community of Vernon, Texas , in the summer of 1974. While we were familiar with earthquakes, we had no idea of the sheer terror that a tornado could inflict in an instant.

Finding Hope and Building Faith: Embracing the Power of Belief

In times of uncertainty and struggle, many of us seek something to hold onto—a foundation to give us hope for the future. It is in these moments that understanding the true nature of faith can provide the comfort and strength we desperately need. What is Faith? At its core, faith is the act of believing in something that may not yet be evident to us. It is trusting that what we hope for will come to pass, even when our current circumstances may seem bleak. The essence of faith lies in its substance; it brings stability into our lives and shapes our expectations. This is beautifully captured in the biblical definition of faith found in Hebrews 11:1, which reminds us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. The Substance of Faith

You’ll often discover that the hidden gems—those unassuming hole-in-the-wall spots—serve up the best food around. Just think about it: if a place has been thriving in the same location for decades, you can bet they’ve mastered their recipes. Take Taco Treat in Arcadia, California, for example. From the outside, it may not look like much, but trust me, it’s a food lover’s paradise.

A Turning Point in History: America's Entry into World War I On April 6, 1917, a critical moment unfolded in the annals of history as the United States formally entered World War I. Just two days prior, the U.S. Senate, with a decisive vote of 82 to 6, endorsed a declaration of war against Germany, a step that was followed by the House of Representatives, which supported the resolution with an overwhelming vote of 373 to 50. This event marked the end of an era of American neutrality and reshaped the trajectory of global conflict.

Walking in Faith: What Sacrifice Looks Like in the Life of a Christian | Ken Hulsey

As Christians, we should use the Easter holiday as a time for reflection. Beyond the commercialization of this celebration—the day our Savior, Jesus Christ , arose from the dead—we should take time to contemplate the sacrifice made on our behalf. Indeed, Easter is more than just chocolate bunnies, egg hunts, and a wonderful ham dinner, although those aspects are enjoyable too. It is a remembrance and celebration of the life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God, through whom all sins are forgiven, and salvation is made possible.

Uncovering Calico Ghost Town: A Journey to California’s Silver Mining Past | Ken Hulsey Photographer

If you have ever traveled from Los Angeles to Las Vegas via the I-15 freeway, you have probably noticed the name "Calico" formed out of white rocks atop a mountain just outside of Barstow. If you were curious enough to detour off the highway for an hour or so to discover what those rocks were all about, you would uncover an otherworldly site that was once a silver mining town. The structures here range from traditional Western dwellings to others built directly into the rocky hills, which would look just as much at home on Mars as they do in the California desert.
