Unraveling the Web: Why 'Spider-Noir' is the Ultimate Nostalgic Thrill Ride!
Terri and I have a new show that we are hooked on, and we stumbled upon it quite by accident. I was actually searching on Amazon Prime for a new documentary series for both of us to watch since we had just finished watching two really good ones by Ken Burns, Louis & Clark, and The American Buffalo, and the advertising for Spider-Noir (Watch now on Prime Video) was the first thing that popped up. I was waiting on Terri to finish up in the kitchen, so I watched the trailer for the show and immediately became interested.
We are both huge fans of classic noir films and Spider-Man, so this looked right up our alley. I have to come out and say that this show is absolutely amazing. Nicolas Cage's portrayal of the gumshoe/superhero Ben Reilly (The Spider) captures the true essence of a classic Noir detective. His demeanor and quick quips have been pulled from the performances of James Cagney and William Powell, with a heavy dose of Humphrey Bogart thrown in as the cherry on top. Indeed, Cage can whip out the sarcastic one-liners like a pro. It's a perfect performance by Cage and an absolute perfect homage to the classic characters from the golden age of Noir cinema.

Like any great Noir detective, Reily has the perfect woman by his side, someone who can deal out the one-liners as good as he can and be the yin to his yang, so to speak. Philip Marlowe (Bogart) had Vivian Rutlage (Lauren Bacall), Nick Charles (William Powell) had Nora Charles (Mirna Loy), and Reilly had Janet Ruiz (Karen Rodriguez), not the wife or love interest in this case, but his very charming and quick-witted secretary that keeps the detective on track.
There is, of course, a "dame"; there has to be one in any noir, and in this story, it's Cat Hardy (Li Jun Li) the lounge singer who is at the middle of a complex web of gangsters and supervillains. As in any great noir, you don't have a clue whether she is the damsel in distress or another villain. Which, of course, is one of the plot points that keeps you on your toes. Of course, Reilly has the hots for her, of course, Hardy has the hots for him, or so we are led to believe. There is a good chance that Reilly is being played by Hardy; that's the hook, of course.
Spider-Man Noir: Hard-Boiled Origins Paperback – by David Hine (Author) - $21.99 @ Amazon.com - Order Now!The show is such a good Noir that it is easy to forget that it is also a superhero story with a web-slinging hero and mutant bad guys with superhuman abilities running around. For as good as the show is as a detective story, it is also a great superhero program. In this case, the comic book elements just add to the mystery by applying more layers to the complexities of the stories and interactions of the main cast. Spider-Man Noir is an instant classic and I can't wait to see how it all plays out. Every episode has you on the edge of your seat in anticipation of the next plot twist. You take the ride along with Reilly as he tries to peel back all the layers and sew the pieces together. It's just the kind of entertainment that has been missing from both movies and television for far too long.
