Walking on Water: Overcoming Fear and Embracing Faith in the Face of Life's Challenges | Ken Hulsey

Imagine yourself sailing on a serene lake, the gentle waves lapping against your boat. As you gaze toward the shore, a figure emerges, and after a moment of focus, you realize it's a man. To your astonishment, you see him walking toward you on the surface of the water.

As he approaches, it becomes clear—this is Jesus. He stops about fifty yards away and gestures for you to step out of the boat and join him on the water. Now, here's where I find myself facing a real challenge.

I must admit, I have a couple of fears—heights and water. When I was just a toddler, my brother and sister-in-law took me to the beach. Overcome with excitement, I dashed into the water, only to be knocked down by a sudden wave. I don’t recall how close I came to danger, but that moment left a lasting impression on me. My family quickly pulled me out, and thank goodness, I was perfectly fine. That experience has stuck with me, and I never did learn to swim. Can you imagine the struggle I’d face in that moment? Even with Jesus right there before me, stepping out of the boat would be incredibly daunting. Deep down, I know He wouldn’t allow any harm to come to me, yet that old fear still clings to me. When you think about it, it’s a bit silly. As I picture that scenario now, anxiety creeps in, revealing just how much my faith needs to flourish. Even with Jesus standing right in front of me, I would still hesitate to walk on that water. It really makes me think about the miracles I may have missed simply because of a lack of faith.

The water symbolizes the obstacles we all encounter in life. Each of us has some fear or phobia that holds us back from fully embracing joy and happiness. But if we could nurture authentic faith in God, there would be nothing to fear. I want to believe that if I were to see Jesus face to face, I’d be filled with such overwhelming emotion that stepping out of the boat wouldn't be a struggle—it would feel natural to rush into the arms of my Savior. I genuinely believe that’s possible. As Jesus teaches us in Matthew 17:20, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." So, let’s not allow our fears to keep us from experiencing all the miracles waiting just beyond our own self-imposed barriers. Step out of your boat and embrace the incredible journey ahead!

Blessings

Blessings: We often forget that everything in life, including life itself, is a blessing from God. As a man of faith I thank God during my daily prayer for all those blessings He has bestowed upon myself and my family. If you ever want to know just how blessed you really are? Just take a few moments to look around you. There are many people who are having a much harder time getting through their daily life than you are. Take time to pray for those people. Even though it may not seem like it to the casual observer, The Lord is taking care of them as well. We live in a world full of distractions. From cell phones to television our daily lives are filled with things that take our minds off our problems as well as God. I urge you to take the time to look around you. There is a beautiful world out there. Instead of watching another cute cat video, watch some children playing, look at a sunset or if you have the means take a walk in the woods. The miracle of God's creation is all around you and is a much more wonderful show than anything on the television or internet. Take every opportunity to disconnect from technology and grow closer to God through enjoyment of his wonders.
