Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey  Many travelers who drive out of Los Angeles and Orange County through the Inland Empire and Cajon Pass to all points east, including Las Vegas, on Interstate 15 don't realize that there are several miles of the old Route 66 that still exist a mere hundred or so yards away.  The old highway that once served as the only road through the pass is now only taken by motorists who want to try and avoid traffic congestion due to accidents or weekend travelers trying to get to Sin City or other desert recreation areas.

 Written By Ken Hulsey This past weekend, my wife and I decided to explore Lufkin, a charming city in eastern Texas. We arrived around noon, so naturally, our first stop was for food. We noticed the usual fast-food chains everywhere, and just as we were about to settle for a local Whataburger, I spotted a retro drive-in across the street. Why choose something we could have anytime when we had the chance to enjoy some of the local flavors?

 Back in February of 2023, I received a USB drive from my compadre Everett Lueck of the Southern Forest Heritage Museum that contains an enormous amount of information about life in Central Louisiana in the early to mid 20th century. The files that he sent me include documents, newspaper articles, letters, a couple of videos and huge amount of vintage photographs. The bulk of the material focuses on the lumber industry and the railroads that operated in this part of the state.

On a whim, we discovered the Kern County Museum, and being history enthusiasts, we couldn't resist the chance to explore its treasures. What awaited us was a delightful surprise that far exceeded our expectations.

This show took viewers on a thrilling journey through a world filled with mysterious phenomena, tapping into our innate desire to explore the unknown. It all began with the creative genius of Alan Landsburg, who produced three intriguing documentaries: In Search of Ancient Astronauts in 1973, and In Search of Ancient Mysteries and The Outer Space Connection in 1975. Each of these projects featured the iconic narration of Rod Serling, who many hoped would lead the spin-off show. After his untimely passing, Leonard Nimoy stepped in, bringing his own unique charm to the series as the host.

Earlier this year, a routine trip to the doctor served as a wake-up call when my test results showed that my health was in dire shape. Lifestyle changes had to be made, or I was going to end up in a very bad way. I started watching what I ate, began exercising, and started taking a handful of medications every morning. It seems that when you start getting older, a sedentary lifestyle isn't good for you.  Who knew?

 Written By Ken Hulsey In 2021, I experienced a harrowing incident on my drive home from work. While navigating the highway in heavy rain, I hydroplaned and lost control of my car. However, I can say without hesitation that Jesus protected me through the entire ordeal. In the days that followed, many people remarked on how 'lucky' I was to have emerged unharmed. But I am here to profess that it was not mere luck - it was divine intervention.

 In my eight years here in Louisiana, I have learned many things about life. Moving from a metropolis like Los Angeles to a small central Louisiana farming town has taught me to enjoy the simpler things in life.
