An All-American Burger at Fatboy & Skinny's in Leesville Louisiana


 In my eight years here in Louisiana, I have learned many things about life. Moving from a metropolis like Los Angeles to a small central Louisiana farming town has taught me to enjoy the simpler things in life. 

That's where my review of Fatboy & Skinny's in Leesville starts with some simplicity and getting down to basics. Today my wife and I were in town for a doctor's appointment and stopped in for lunch. The first thing that caught our eye about this particular burger joint was that it was operating inside an old gas station.

If there is anything that I know for certain about dining out in Louisiana is that if the restaurant is in an old filling station, then it's a place that you have to try out.

Secondly, my wife and I were in the mood for a good hamburger, and we didn't want something from any old run-of-the-mill fast food chain. Any time you take a chance on a local joint, not endorsed by a clown, you never quite know exactly what to expect when it comes to the quality of the vittles, yet on this occasion we decided to take the gamble.

Thankfully for us, this gamble came up 7's across the board. 

We were hungry, but not too hungry, so we both ordered The Skinny, which was the smaller hamburger on the menu, along with a single order of fries and a couple of sodas, and I have to say that everything was absolutely fabulous. The sandwich was probably the purest hamburger that I have ever had. When I say 'purest,' I mean the most honest, straightforward hamburger that you could possibly get. It was simple: a large meat patty with lettuce, tomato, and onions topped with a slice of American cheese with a dab of ketchup and mayonnaise between two fresh buns. An all-American hamburger like the ones that we have all enjoyed at backyard picnics and summer ballgames. Simple and delicious.

The fries were also amazing. There is just something special about hand-cut French fries with the skin still attached. These were cooked to the perfect consistency, which was a balance of golden brown crispiness with just enough greasiness to make them the perfect counterparts to the burgers.

The staff at Fatboy & Skinny's were fun, cheerful, and great to talk to. That is one of the real charms of interacting with people from this region of the country. They are almost always open, honest, and refreshingly down-to-earth. You could really sense that this restaurant was something that they really loved. The smiles on their faces told a story that didn't need words to tell it.

If you are passing through Leesville, you absolutely have to eat at Fatboy & Skinny's!

Located just off the Sierra Highway (California Highway 14) in Acton, Vincent Hill Station is a fine dining establishment that features live music and dancing. The folk down here are hard working, polite, loving and God fearing. They greet you with a smile and they genuinely want to know how you are. It's not just lip service. If you are looking for good people look no further than the Pelican State. The people of Louisiana, for the most part, all attend church on a regular basis if not every Sunday. Their grandparents attended church, their parents attended church, so likewise they attend and then go out someplace with the family for some good old fashioned southern cooking. It's a matter of tradition  as much as it's a matter of religion. It's just what you have to do.
