Pastor Leanne Matthesius - Awaken Church - When the House of the Priest Doesn’t Feel Like the House of the Father

Image
In this powerful message, Ps. Leanne reads Judges 19 and uncovers how the spirit of the world will hide under the veil of religion. Sometimes All You Need Is A Little Gospel And A Strong Cup Of Coffee

The Sun Sets on Bayou Boeuf in Lecompte, Louisiana Story and Photo by Ken Hulsey I have often noted that the strength of Louisiana comes from its people. The folk down here are hard working, polite, loving and God fearing. They greet you with a smile and they genuinely want to know how you are. It's not just lip service. If you are looking for good people look no further than the Pelican State. The people of Louisiana, for the most part, all attend church on a regular basis if not every Sunday. Their grandparents attended church, their parents attended church, so likewise they attend and then go out someplace with the family for some good old fashioned southern cooking. It's a matter of tradition  as much as it's a matter of religion. It's just what you have to do. It's often been discussed around my church that the major hurdle to reaching people here in this region is that people attend church out of obligation instead of seeking the word of God. No matter what se...

A sharp decline in Americans reading the Bible may be connected to drop in church attendance

Image
From Christianity Today When researchers for the American Bible Society’s annual State of the Bible report saw this year’s survey statistics, they found it hard to believe the results. The data said roughly 26 million people had mostly or completely stopped reading the Bible in the last year. “We reviewed our calculations. We double-checked our math and ran the numbers again … and again,” John Plake, lead researcher for the American Bible Society, wrote in the 2022 report . “What we discovered was startling, disheartening, and disruptive.” In 2021, about 50 percent of Americans said they read the Bible on their own at least three or four times per year. That percentage had stayed more or less steady since 2011. But in 2022, it dropped 11 points. Now only 39 percent say they read the Bible multiple times per year or more. It is the steepest, sharpest decline on record. According to the 12th annual State of the Bible report, it wasn’t just the occasional Scripture readers who didn’t...

It's Time For Christians To Join The Public Arena

Image
Over the past couple of weeks I have heard a message being preached from several different pulpits, articles and even songs. This message is that it is time for Christians to stop being silent, rise into action, and speak the truth publicly about the message of Jesus Christ and the state of society as a whole. I would also echo that it is time for Americans to speak out and openly combat the forces that want to change our nation into something that more resembles the totalitarian state of George Orwell's classic novel 1984. In case you are unfamiliar with the plot: In the year 1984, civilization has been damaged by war, civil conflict, and revolution. Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain) is a province of Oceania, one of the three totalitarian super-states that rule the world. It is ruled by the "Party" under the ideology of "Ingsoc" (a Newspeak shortening of "English Socialism") and the mysterious leader Big Brother, who has an intense cul...

Charlie Kirk Talks About The Future Of America

Image
I spent a good portion of Wednesday listening to Charlie Kirk's four part sermon/lecture at Legacy Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In each episode Kirk talked in depth about his relationship with Jesus and how the modern church needs to shake off the 'separation of church and state' moniker and get involved in our political system.  Kirk used a wonderful combination of science, history and scripture to make the point that the church needs to stop being quiet if this nation is to change it's present political and social course.   Granted, since Kirk's presentation took place in New Mexico, he did spend some time focusing on politics in the state. In case you are unaware of the current stat of things in The Land of Enchantment it has been under some of the strictest lockdown restrictions in the country since the beginning of the pandemic and the states economy has greatly suffered. There has also been a massive increase in drug and alcohol addiction, depression an...

In This Time Of Need The Church Should Not Abandon Its Mission

Image
This morning I felt called to share two sermons that I listened to this week that really had a strong impact on my thinking about my walk with Christ. The first is by pastor Steve Smotherman of Legacy Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In this clip Smotherman explains have it is the duty of the Church in this time of a global pandemic to remain firm in its mission to remain open and serve the people who really need it (which is everyone). The second was actually preached by our son-in-law, pastor Steven Roberts of Journey Church in Pineville, Louisiana. He explains how the disciples missed out on experiencing a miracle by leaving Christ's side to search for food, choosing to serve their own needs over their mission to serve the Lord.   The true underlying message of both these sermons actually played out in real time just prior to our second service. I bumped into a friend of mine who I hadn't seen in a few weeks. When I greeted him and asked how he was doing, he replie...
