Rising Above: Finding Strength and Love in Times of Turmoil

Finding Strength and Wisdom in Scripture

In a world filled with uncertainty and turmoil, many seek wisdom that provides strength and comfort. The teachings from various spiritual leaders in history offer insights that resonate deeply with our human experience. They remind us of the enduring power of love, faith, and the ability to overcome challenges.

The scriptures offer profound encouragement. In Isaiah 12:2, we are reminded, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” This verse invites us to rely on divine strength, urging us to let go of fear. In times of hardship, trusting in something greater than ourselves can be liberating and empowering.

Jesus taught love and compassion, even for those who oppose us. In His sermon, He said, “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you...” (Matthew 5:44). This radical call to love transcends the instinctive human reactions of anger or resentment. Instead, it fosters a spirit of empathy and understanding. By embodying these principles, we strengthen our character and promote harmony, reflecting our divine heritage as children of God.

Life challenges often test our resolve, but the Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability.” This scripture emphasizes our resilience and the assurance that we are not alone in our struggles. God provides a way for us to endure challenges, reinforcing the belief that we can rise even stronger than before.

The influential words of Martin Luther King Jr. echo the theme of hope amidst adversity. He proclaimed, “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.” Holding on to hope in the darkest times is essential; it encourages us to work collectively toward a better future. Just as he believed in the power of love and truth, we too can leverage these ideals to illuminate paths toward peace.

Similarly, Mahatma Gandhi inspires us with his belief that “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” Conviction in the goodness of humanity can empower us to effect change, fostering a spirit of unity rather than division. It calls upon us to focus on the positive qualities we share as humans, encouraging an environment of support and kindness.

Moreover, the story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery (John 8:2-11) encapsulates the essence of mercy and forgiveness. Jesus challenged the crowd with, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her,” illustrating the importance of humility and compassion over judgment.

As you navigate your spiritual journey, let these teachings resonate within you. Seek strength from your faith, express love, embody empathy, and maintain your hope. Engage with these timeless truths; they serve as a foundation upon which to build a wiser, kinder, and more resilient self.

Photos By Ken Hulsey / Story By Terri Hulsey Victorville is on the southwestern edge of the Mojave Desert. Established in 1895, the downtown area grew around historic Route 66 (now 7th Street). The town soon became known as a prime location for shooting westerns in the 40s and 50s but Victorville was also a memorable setting during the Hollywood heyday of space sagas. Infamous director Jack Arnold (“Creature from the Black Lagoon,” "This Island Earth,” “The Incredible Shrinking Man”) shot the opening scene of “It Came from Outer Space” (1953) here. The UFO flew over the rocks on the east side of the Narrows, near the Rainbow Bridge, and crashed in Old Town Victorville.

You may have heard the phrase, “hurting people hurt people.” There is so much brokenness in this world, and so many hurting people today. It is well known that those who have been emotionally damaged tend to inflict their hurt on others. People who have suffered abuse, at times, become abusers themselves. Those who have suffered under an alcoholic parent often cause their future family to suffer because they become alcoholics.
