Experience the Magic of Albuquerque: Where History Meets the Modern Wild West!

Albuquerque, New Mexico is truly one of the most fascinating and exotic big cities in America. Nestled in the high desert at the base of the soaring Sandia Mountains, Albuquerque is a place where ancient Native American culture, Spanish colonial history, the rugged Wild West, and cutting-edge modernism all converge. The city's diverse cultural tapestry is on vivid display, from the colorful Old Town plaza with its 18th century adobe buildings to the trendy shops and eateries of Nob Hill. Albuquerque's food scene is the stuff of legend, with its tongue-tingling New Mexican cuisine laden with green chiles and slow-cooked carne adovada. The city's Native American roots run deep, evidenced in places like the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Albuquerque is also a nature-lover's paradise, with the mighty Rio Grande snaking through town and the Sandia Peak Tramway whisking you to an alpine wonderland over 10,000 feet high. And every October, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta attracts thousands to gaze in awe at the spectacle of hundreds of colorful hot air balloons dotting the bright blue New Mexico sky. Through it all, Albuquerque retains a friendly, down-to-earth vibe that makes everyone feel welcome in this one-of-a-kind Southwestern metropolis.

In Albuquerque, the old and the new weave together seamlessly to create a vibrant, diverse city with deep roots and a modern flair. The city's rich history stretches back centuries, with some buildings in Old Town dating to the early 1700s when Albuquerque was just a small outpost in the Spanish colony of Nuevo México. Wandering the narrow streets, you can't help but feel transported to another era as you admire the earthy adobe walls and imagine the bustle of daily life hundreds of years ago. Yet just a short distance away, sleek high-rises and hip eateries showcase the city's 21st century energy and style. Gleaming office towers share the skyline with the reddish peaks of the Sandia Mountains, a visual reminder of how the manmade and the natural coexist in Albuquerque. Even the city's verdant heart, the cottonwood forest known as the Bosque that hugs the banks of the Rio Grande, has shaped and been shaped by human activity over hundreds of years, from ancestral Puebloan times to the present day. In a place like Albuquerque, history doesn't just linger in the background - it pulses through the very lifeblood of the city, adding depth and character to the modern metropolis that has grown up around it. Whether you're sipping a margarita in a century-old cantina or mountain biking along the foothills, you can't escape the sense that Albuquerque is a city with stories to tell, where the ancient and the cutting-edge mingle to create something wholly unique.

Every October, the skies above Albuquerque, New Mexico come alive with a dazzling display of color, shape, and wonder during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This world-renowned event, produced by a non-profit organization, has grown from humble beginnings in 1972 with just 13 balloons to become the largest gathering of hot air balloons and ballooning enthusiasts on earth. Over the course of nine magical days, more than 500 balloons of every hue and design imaginable launch into the crisp fall air as dawn breaks over the Sandia Mountains. From whimsical special shapes like penguins and cows to the classic teardrop balloons in rainbow colors, the floating armada creates an enchanting and unforgettable spectacle. In the evenings, the excitement continues as 200 balloons light up the night with ethereal balloon glows and shimmering fireworks dance across the sky. Balloon Fiesta Park, a sprawling 78-acre field the size of 56 football fields, serves as the launch pad for all the events, including thrilling gas balloon races that float away at dusk to the stirring sounds of the competitors' national anthems. With its spirit of camaraderie, adventure, and awe, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a bucket-list experience that brings joy and wonderment to all who attend.

Albuquerque, New Mexico's largest city, offers a wealth of exciting things to see and do for visitors of all ages and interests. One of the most popular and iconic attractions is the Sandia Peak Tramway, which has carried over 12 million passengers to the top of the 10,378 foot Sandia Peak since 1966. The 15-minute ride in the tram offers unparalleled panoramic views stretching over 11,000 square miles, from the Rio Grande snaking through the city to the distant volcanic fields and mountain ranges on the horizon. For those fascinated by science and natural history, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is an absolute must-visit. Remembering Terrible Tuesday: The Devastating Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak of 1979

Written By Ken Hulsey On April 10th and 11th, 1979, a confirmed 59 tornadoes ripped through Northern Texas, Oklahoma, and several nearby states. This mass outbreak of deadly storms was officially named the Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak, but for all who survived, it was known as "Terrible Tuesday." My family moved from Whittier, California , to the farming community of Vernon, Texas , in the summer of 1974. While we were familiar with earthquakes, we had no idea of the sheer terror that a tornado could inflict in an instant.

The Enduring Legacy of Macross: How a Groundbreaking Series Reshaped Anime Forever!

Written By: Ken Hulsey  In 1984, the animated television series Macross soared to new heights in popularity in Japan. Never before had an animated series captivated the Japanese public like Macross. While shows like Astro Boy , Kimba , Gigantor , Mazinger , and Gundam had amassed devoted young followings, Macross transcended age, class, and gender barriers in a way no anime had before it. Songs from the series, sung by voice actress Mari Iijima as the character Lynn Minmay , were climbing the charts one after another. In fact, Lynn Minmay had become as much of a pop culture phenomenon in Japan as Madonna was in America, despite being a fictional character. Recognizing Macross' widespread popularity, directors Noboru Ishiguro and Shoji Kawamori began work on a big-screen adaptation of the series. A theatrical release would allow for higher production values, crisper animation, and a more mature storyline. The challenge would be condensing the TV series's numerous episodes and...

Echoes of a Forgotten Town: Discovering the Hidden Stories of Lecompte, Louisiana

Photos & Story By Ken Hulsey Last night, I was talking to a couple of friends from New Mexico , trying to explain what life is like in a small farming town in Central Louisiana. I discussed in depth the poverty and decay that have come to define the area. I shared how the town of Lecompte  (pronounced "le-count") was once very prosperous—a railroad town that thrived on cotton, sugar cane, and lumber. I explained how the decline in demand for those goods, combined with the construction of an interstate highway nearby that diverted tourists away from the town, ultimately sealed its fate. My friends were genuinely shocked when I mentioned that I could see about a dozen abandoned houses and stores from my front yard.

Finding Hope and Building Faith: Embracing the Power of Belief

In times of uncertainty and struggle, many of us seek something to hold onto—a foundation to give us hope for the future. It is in these moments that understanding the true nature of faith can provide the comfort and strength we desperately need. What is Faith? At its core, faith is the act of believing in something that may not yet be evident to us. It is trusting that what we hope for will come to pass, even when our current circumstances may seem bleak. The essence of faith lies in its substance; it brings stability into our lives and shapes our expectations. This is beautifully captured in the biblical definition of faith found in Hebrews 11:1, which reminds us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. The Substance of Faith
