Roadside Wonders: Meet Dinny and Mr. Rex—California’s Iconic Dinosaur Duo!

Photos and Story By Ken Hulsey

You can't miss the towering 100-foot giants standing proudly by the highway! That was exactly the vision of restaurant owner and artist Claude Bell when he created a colossal replica of a Brontosaurus, affectionately named Dinny. Built from leftover materials from the construction of the nearby I-10 freeway, this awe-inspiring creature came to life in 1964, complete with a gift shop nestled inside to entice hungry travelers to the Wheel Inn Restaurant. Fast forward to 1981, and Dinny welcomed a formidable companion—a Tyrannosaurus Rex named Mr. Rex! Initially, Mr. Rex was equipped with a slide for adventurous kids, but safety concerns led to the slide being removed and plastered over, ensuring that everyone could enjoy the spectacle without worry.

The excitement didn't stop there! In the 1980s, these two legendary dinosaurs burst onto the scene as pop culture icons, making memorable appearances in the music video for the British duo Tears for Fears' hit song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and the whimsical film "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" in 1985. Their fame only grew as they captured the imagination of audiences far and wide.

Although the Wheel Inn Restaurant closed its doors in 2013, Dinny and Mr. Rex have continued to thrive, now part of the vibrant Mr. Rex's Dinosaur Adventure, an incredible dinosaur-themed attraction that has sprung up next door! The gift shop inside Dinny is still rocking and rolling, offering a fantastic selection of dinosaur toys, t-shirts, and other fun memorabilia for fans of all ages.

With the addition of a large outlet mall and an Indian casino just down the road, there are now even more reasons to stop off the I-10 in Cabazon. Yet, it’s these two amazing concrete leviathans that continue to ignite the imaginations of children and adults alike, reminding us of the wonder and excitement that comes with a love for dinosaurs. Whether you're a nostalgic traveler or a curious explorer, a visit to see Dinny and Mr. Rex is an unforgettable adventure waiting to happen!

Remembering Terrible Tuesday: The Devastating Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak of 1979

Written By Ken Hulsey On April 10th and 11th, 1979, a confirmed 59 tornadoes ripped through Northern Texas, Oklahoma, and several nearby states. This mass outbreak of deadly storms was officially named the Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak, but for all who survived, it was known as "Terrible Tuesday." My family moved from Whittier, California , to the farming community of Vernon, Texas , in the summer of 1974. While we were familiar with earthquakes, we had no idea of the sheer terror that a tornado could inflict in an instant. If you live, or have lived, in tornado country, you understand that you don't even need to see a tornado forming to feel uneasy when the atmospheric conditions align to create the kind of storm that could produce one. The pressure drops, the hot air turns cold, and the hairs on your arms and the back of your neck stand up. You feel as if you are in another world, and something is terribly wrong. Sometimes, the skies can display odd colors—orange, g...

The Enduring Legacy of Macross: How a Groundbreaking Series Reshaped Anime Forever!

Written By: Ken Hulsey  In 1984, the animated television series Macross soared to new heights in popularity in Japan. Never before had an animated series captivated the Japanese public like Macross. While shows like Astro Boy , Kimba , Gigantor , Mazinger , and Gundam had amassed devoted young followings, Macross transcended age, class, and gender barriers in a way no anime had before it. Songs from the series, sung by voice actress Mari Iijima as the character Lynn Minmay , were climbing the charts one after another. In fact, Lynn Minmay had become as much of a pop culture phenomenon in Japan as Madonna was in America, despite being a fictional character. Recognizing Macross' widespread popularity, directors Noboru Ishiguro and Shoji Kawamori began work on a big-screen adaptation of the series. A theatrical release would allow for higher production values, crisper animation, and a more mature storyline. The challenge would be condensing the TV series's numerous episodes and...

Explore the Jemez Mountains: Soda Dam, Hot Springs & Battleship Rock | Discover New Mexico

Written By: Ken Hulsey One of my fondest memories from living in New Mexico was exploring the stunning Jemez Mountains. The area was ideal for summer motorcycle rides, hiking adventures, and camping trips. The region is dotted with captivating geological wonders like the Soda Dam (and its picturesque waterfall), the Sulphur Hot Springs, and the towering Battleship Rock. The natural beauty of this place is not only visually breathtaking, but also has a profound, almost spiritual, quality to it. Here are some must-visit spots if you find yourself in the Jemez area. Jemez Springs Soda Dam (Soda Dam Hot Spring) This was the first location my family discovered when visiting Jemez Valley. You can't help but pull over when you see the unique rock formations surrounding the waterfall on the Jemez River. Soda Dam, a mini-version of Mammoth Hot Springs, sits just north of the Village of Jemez Springs. Built up over millions of years, this ancient behemoth hulks across the valley - a great ...

Finding Hope and Building Faith: Embracing the Power of Belief

In times of uncertainty and struggle, many of us seek something to hold onto—a foundation to give us hope for the future. It is in these moments that understanding the true nature of faith can provide the comfort and strength we desperately need. What is Faith? At its core, faith is the act of believing in something that may not yet be evident to us. It is trusting that what we hope for will come to pass, even when our current circumstances may seem bleak. The essence of faith lies in its substance; it brings stability into our lives and shapes our expectations. This is beautifully captured in the biblical definition of faith found in Hebrews 11:1, which reminds us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen. The Substance of Faith So, what is the substance of this faith? For many believers, that substance is found in Jesus Christ . Just as a solid foundation supports a sturdy building, our faith in Christ provides stability amidst life's ...
