Gibsland, Louisiana, was a quiet little town in north-central Louisiana in 1934. Nothing much had ever happened there until two of America's most notorious outlaws, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, stopped in for breakfast. Unbeknownst to them, this would be their last meal, as just south of the town, a posse of Texas and Louisiana lawmen had set up an ambush that would ultimately end their two-year spree of killings and robberies with a barrage of bullets.
To my surprise, the Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum was an absolute delight. Inside, you'll find an extensive collection of everything related to these infamous criminals, from personal items owned by the duo to a comprehensive archive of magazine articles written about them. This vast collection perfectly blends true crime with pop culture.
When it comes to Bonnie and Clyde, distinguishing fact from fiction can be challenging. Still, the exhibits provide a thorough exploration of this notorious pair, detailing their early years and leading up to that fateful day south of town. I was particularly impressed by the museum's collection of rare photographs, many of which I doubt have ever been seen before.
Additionally, you can relax with fellow Bonnie and Clyde enthusiasts while watching a documentary about this infamous couple. There’s nothing quite like bonding with others while delving into a story of a murderous crime spree.
If you’re a fan of the numerous films made about them, you won’t be disappointed. One room in the museum is dedicated to memorabilia from those movies, especially the iconic 1967 film starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
There's truly something for everyone here. The Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum is located at 2419 Main St. in Gibsland and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Admission is $10 per person.
