Savoring the Best: Why Flying Heart Brewing is Central Louisiana's Pizza Paradise! | Ken's Restaurant Reviews

If you're in central Louisiana and looking for great pizza and handcrafted beer, you have to stop by Flying Heart Brewing in Natchitoches.

Honestly, I haven't had a great pizza since my family moved here from California almost six years ago. People in Alexandria rave about Wildwood Pizza, but when my partner and I tried to eat there, we were met with a terrible septic smell as soon as we walked in. We've never been back since. Eating at Philly's Pizza in Pineville has been a mixed experience, with decent pies sometimes overshadowed by greasy offerings. It’s disheartening when an Ultimate Supreme from Little Caesars becomes your go-to pizza due to a lack of better options.

That said, our experience at Flying Heart was truly wonderful. We started with Pretzel Bites served with delicious Black Heart-infused Cheddar Sauce and HWY 80-infused Ale Mustard. For the main course, I chose the Carnitas Pizza by Jared, topped with Salsa Verde, Ranch, Mozzarella, Pork Carnitas, White Onions, Cilantro, and Chipotle Cheddar. It was an amazing fusion that satisfied both my love of Mexican food and my love of pizza. I can't recommend it enough; it was absolutely delicious!

To wash it all down, I ordered the HWY 80 IPA. Normally, I'm not a huge IPA drinker, but since my son-in-law ordered one, I decided to follow suit. It turned out to be one of the better IPAs I’ve ever had, and I would definitely recommend it.

Here’s a bit of information about Flying Heart Brewing from their website:

Flying Heart Brewing & Pub is owned and operated by two couples who share a love for creative beer, interesting people, and Northwest Louisiana. Leah was getting ready to leave for an overseas deployment and Ben Hart needed something to occupy all his spare time. Ben and Elizabeth Pattillo were just learning to brew when they decided to make it a group activity with their new friends, Ben and Leah Hart.

After they brewed their first batch, they waited for four long weeks to try their new creation. And when the time came to tap into the brew, the group bonding activity quickly turned into an obsession. Flying Heart Brew Club was formed that same night. The moral of the story: if you want to make friends, do it with beer!

It didn't take long for the friends to drink their initial inventory, so they started brewing larger batches. They also began experimenting and creating a variety of recipes which reflected the varying flavor preferences of not only themselves, but their group of ever expanding volunteer taste testers .One night, the always ambitious Elizabeth said, "How cool would it be if we did this for a living?" And for once, her husband actually listened to her. In August 2014, Flying Heart Brewing was officially founded.

The group purchased historic Fire Station Number 6 on Barksdale Blvd. in Bossier City and began renovations to develop the location into the city's first brewery. From conversations around a fire pit to a fully operational brewery and tasting room, The Hart and Pattillo families opened the doors to Flying Heart Brewing in 2015 and have been welcoming beer lovers in ever since. Now with a staple line-up of 7 different styles and a variety of seasonal brews, Flying Heart Brewing is looking forward to what's next.

Just a Thought: Ungodly Fear | Pastor Steve Smothermon

Fear can cause us to do and think the craziest stuff. It can cause us to doubt God and ourselves, to think the worst instead of the best, to see only the negative instead of what is going on in our lives that is positive, and to be overly hard on ourselves.

Lost But Not Alone: A Journey Through Pain That Led Me Back to God

Written by Ken Hulsey  A relationship with God can be an amazing journey filled with incredible experiences. However, it can also involve hardships and trials meant to foster spiritual growth. I took the image above back in 2011, and it’s hard to believe that it's been 15 years since then. I snapped it with my phone while crossing over the 405 Freeway in Irvine on my journey home from work. At that time, I was working the late shift at a nearby environmental laboratory and didn’t have a car, so I walked everywhere I needed to go.

As I rumaged through my 90s music playlist on Spotify today, nostalgia washed over me, taking me back to a time when rock music felt raw and real. The early 1990s were marked by an intensity that resonated through the airwaves, a sonic reflection of a world grappling with societal changes. In that era, while many leaned into angst and rebellion, Suzanne Vega emerged as a unique voice with her 1992 album, 99.9 F°, which showcased a significant evolution in her sound and style, bridging folk and rock with a distinctly experimental twist.

I consider myself above average in intelligence, but my recent conversations have led me to believe that I'm an intellectual compared to most people.

Why Jefferson Stands Out as East Texas' Most Charming Small Town!

Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey This past weekend, Terri and I headed out to East Texas to spend the day in the historic town of Jefferson . Neither of us had ever visited this charming town before, but I had picked up a brochure about it during one of my stops at the Texas Welcome Center in Waskom, which is just west of Shreveport off Interstate 20. I have been interested in exploring East Texas for some time now, so I’ve been collecting brochures about the area for about a year. Before settling in Louisiana, Terri and I had seriously considered relocating to Tyler, but we opted to move closer to our family instead. Nevertheless, our fascination with this part of the country has never left us.
