Living out the Love of God

Imitate your divine parent. (Ephesians 5:1-33, NKJV)
Learn to emit the sweet-smelling aroma of love. (Ephesians 5:2, MSG)

Give up something you love for something you love more. Paul’s contentment did not come from his circumstances, but the intimate relationship he had with Jesus. (Philippians 4:17-20, NKJV) When you sacrificially give to God and His work, you are the one who gets blessed.

You can’t buy love, joy, and peace, but sometimes they become the by-product of the right giving. (Acts 20:35, NKJV; Philippians 4:18-20) Selfish people are never satisfied; Serving people are the most satisfied people.

Meeting the condition of the promise.

Meeting the condition of the promise activates the power of the promise. If we do our part, God will always do His.

Extravagant love in action. (Mark 14:3-11)

We sacrificially give to what we love the most. How much do you love Jesus? You don’t give because you have to, but because you want to.

Many times, what we call money and misery problems are really heart and love problems. Giving becomes an opportunity instead of an obligation. Giving helps us be generous and gracious; when we are not, we often become greedy and selfish.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing about my days in the Southwest over the past couple of months. In my previous posts, I've focused a lot on my experiences in California , New Mexico , and, to some extent, Texas . However, I feel bad for neglecting the great state of Arizona . I often referred to it as "the great land in between" the states I once called home. Although I never lived there, I spent a significant amount of time traveling down the famous Route 66 and later Interstate 40 through Arizona. I have wonderful memories of looking out the window, eating at roadside diners, and stopping at countless tourist traps during family summer vacations.

Rediscovering Lecompte: Vintage Photos and Memories from Central Louisiana’s Past!

 Back in February of 2023, I received a USB drive from my compadre Everett Lueck of the Southern Forest Heritage Museum that contains an enormous amount of information about life in Central Louisiana in the early to mid 20th century. The files that he sent me include documents, newspaper articles, letters, a couple of videos and huge amount of vintage photographs. The bulk of the material focuses on the lumber industry and the railroads that operated in this part of the state.

Rediscovering Smith's Landing: The Story of Louisiana's First Train Station and Its Legacy

Today, I want to share the story of the first railroad built in central Louisiana. Known as the Red River Railroad , or sometimes the Ralph Smith Smith Railroad , this was the very first railroad constructed west of the Mississippi River. It was a simple and roughly built line that transported cotton and other goods that were brought in by barges on Bayou Boeuf .   The place where this railroad began is called Smith’s Landing , and the remaining building in the town of Lecompte is recognized as the first train station built west of the Mississippi. The tracks ran from Lecompte to the banks of the Red River in Alexandria , but much of this route has been lost to time. During the Civil War , Union soldiers tore up the tracks to create a levee, and because of that, we don’t know exactly where the railroad used to go.
