 If you battled with the snooze button and won, if you made it out the door into the world… I’m proud of you and I believe in you. I hope you seize every opportunity today brings, but if you’re not up to it or just not ready… Duck! Let those chances land on someone else!

I don’t know about all of you, but this week has been crazy for me! Adulting hit me hard! This morning was the icing on the cake — I ended up with a black eye when a hanger popped back and hit me right before I walked out the door! I just laughed, shook my head, and went on my way anyway! I won! I hope you did too!


 

I’m not sure if something is in the air or if I’m just stuck in “ping pong mode,” but there’s definitely craziness afoot today! Channel your inner Dodgeball champion—duck and cover, bob and weave… whatever strategy you think will work best! Stay safe out there!

 

Yesterday was a busy day… for my mind. I try to find ways to calm the constant noise in my head. The older I get, the louder my thoughts seem to become. I might just start talking back… but not in a rational adult way! No way! I’m thinking of responding like an angry five-year-old in new boots! “You are not the boss of me!” (as I stomp my feet) “I’m not listening! I’m not listening!” (while spinning around and covering my ears).

 

Now that you have that mental image, the point of my rambling is simply this: We often get in our own way by taking ourselves too seriously. Sometimes, all you really need is a tantrum and a time-out!

Rediscovering Smith's Landing: The Story of Louisiana's First Train Station and Its Legacy

Today, I want to share the story of the first railroad built in central Louisiana. Known as the Red River Railroad , or sometimes the Ralph Smith Smith Railroad , this was the very first railroad constructed west of the Mississippi River. It was a simple and roughly built line that transported cotton and other goods that were brought in by barges on Bayou Boeuf .   The place where this railroad began is called Smith’s Landing , and the remaining building in the town of Lecompte is recognized as the first train station built west of the Mississippi. The tracks ran from Lecompte to the banks of the Red River in Alexandria , but much of this route has been lost to time. During the Civil War , Union soldiers tore up the tracks to create a levee, and because of that, we don’t know exactly where the railroad used to go. Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey  Many travelers who drive out of Los Angeles and Orange County through the Inland Empire and Cajon Pass to all points east, including Las Vegas, on Interstate 15 don't realize that there are several miles of the old Route 66 that still exist a mere hundred or so yards away.  The old highway that once served as the only road through the pass is now only taken by motorists who want to try and avoid traffic congestion due to accidents or weekend travelers trying to get to Sin City or other desert recreation areas.

Rediscovering Lecompte: Vintage Photos and Memories from Central Louisiana’s Past!

 Back in February of 2023, I received a USB drive from my compadre Everett Lueck of the Southern Forest Heritage Museum that contains an enormous amount of information about life in Central Louisiana in the early to mid 20th century. The files that he sent me include documents, newspaper articles, letters, a couple of videos and huge amount of vintage photographs. The bulk of the material focuses on the lumber industry and the railroads that operated in this part of the state.
