 If you battled with the snooze button and won, if you made it out the door into the world… I’m proud of you and I believe in you. I hope you seize every opportunity today brings, but if you’re not up to it or just not ready… Duck! Let those chances land on someone else!

I don’t know about all of you, but this week has been crazy for me! Adulting hit me hard! This morning was the icing on the cake — I ended up with a black eye when a hanger popped back and hit me right before I walked out the door! I just laughed, shook my head, and went on my way anyway! I won! I hope you did too!


 

I’m not sure if something is in the air or if I’m just stuck in “ping pong mode,” but there’s definitely craziness afoot today! Channel your inner Dodgeball champion—duck and cover, bob and weave… whatever strategy you think will work best! Stay safe out there!

 

Yesterday was a busy day… for my mind. I try to find ways to calm the constant noise in my head. The older I get, the louder my thoughts seem to become. I might just start talking back… but not in a rational adult way! No way! I’m thinking of responding like an angry five-year-old in new boots! “You are not the boss of me!” (as I stomp my feet) “I’m not listening! I’m not listening!” (while spinning around and covering my ears).

 

Now that you have that mental image, the point of my rambling is simply this: We often get in our own way by taking ourselves too seriously. Sometimes, all you really need is a tantrum and a time-out!

Ghosts of the Rails: The Abandoned Relics at Ouachita Railroad in Arkansas

Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey This past week I was granted special permission to photograph the Ouachita Railroad facilities in El Dorado, Arkansas . The Ouachita is a small railroad that switches cars from a chemical plant south of town and exchanges them with the Union Pacific . The railroad used to operate over former Rock Island Railroad trackage into northern Louisiana through the nearby town of Junction City. In fact, the facilities that the Ouachita now occupy once belonged to the Rock Island.

 Photos and Story By Ken Hulsey Back in 2012, the San Bernardino Railroad Days in San Bernardino, California, featured a true star of railroading: the ex-Santa Fe "Northern" locomotive #3751. The event attracted a lively crowd of railroad enthusiasts and photographers who eagerly lined the tracks in front of the beautifully preserved vintage passenger depot, all hoping to capture a glimpse of this remarkable piece of living history. As expected, this proud locomotive of the Santa Fe steamed down the Metrolink tracks from her home in Los Angeles, presenting an impressive sight for all to behold.

Cold War Cinema: How ‘Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet’ Became a Unique Cultural Crossover

Written By: Ken Hulsey The film “Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet” may be the most interesting science fiction film to be produced in the 1960s’. Although the film in itself is very well done and features some excellent special effects shots, it’s the film's origin and two different Americanized versions that may be of most interest to fans of this genre. You see, the film was not an American product, but a film made in the former Soviet Union. Although scenes that starred Basil Rathbone and Faith Domergue, filmed by Roger Corman, were inserted into the film for American viewers, the film is still basically “Planeta Bur” (Planet of Storms – 1962) in most respects. In this version, almost all Soviet references were removed from both the film and its credits, although it was hard not to notice the Russian insignias on all the spacecraft. American International must have been very nervous about releasing a Soviet sci-fi film during the middle of the “Cold War.”

Written By Ken Hulsey On April 10th and 11th, 1979, a confirmed 59 tornadoes ripped through Northern Texas, Oklahoma, and several nearby states. This mass outbreak of deadly storms was officially named the Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak, but for all who survived, it was known as "Terrible Tuesday." My family moved from Whittier, California , to the farming community of Vernon, Texas , in the summer of 1974. While we were familiar with earthquakes, we had no idea of the sheer terror that a tornado could inflict in an instant.

Toys By Roy - Winrock Center Mall - Albuquerque, New Mexico - A Trip Down Memory Lane

If you grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico , during the 60s, 70s, or 80s, you likely have fond memories of Toys By Roy. The store was easily recognizable thanks to the large rocking horse logo on its front. In 1961, Roy Ater opened his first Toys By Roy in the brand-new Winrock Center Mall, which was marketed as ‘the largest in the Southwest.’ Ater’s toy store quickly became one of the mall's first and most successful retailers. Over the following years, Toys By Roy expanded into a successful franchise with 34 locations across 9 states.
