 If you battled with the snooze button and won, if you made it out the door into the world… I’m proud of you and I believe in you. I hope you seize every opportunity today brings, but if you’re not up to it or just not ready… Duck! Let those chances land on someone else!

I don’t know about all of you, but this week has been crazy for me! Adulting hit me hard! This morning was the icing on the cake — I ended up with a black eye when a hanger popped back and hit me right before I walked out the door! I just laughed, shook my head, and went on my way anyway! I won! I hope you did too!


 

I’m not sure if something is in the air or if I’m just stuck in “ping pong mode,” but there’s definitely craziness afoot today! Channel your inner Dodgeball champion—duck and cover, bob and weave… whatever strategy you think will work best! Stay safe out there!

 

Yesterday was a busy day… for my mind. I try to find ways to calm the constant noise in my head. The older I get, the louder my thoughts seem to become. I might just start talking back… but not in a rational adult way! No way! I’m thinking of responding like an angry five-year-old in new boots! “You are not the boss of me!” (as I stomp my feet) “I’m not listening! I’m not listening!” (while spinning around and covering my ears).

 

Now that you have that mental image, the point of my rambling is simply this: We often get in our own way by taking ourselves too seriously. Sometimes, all you really need is a tantrum and a time-out!

First, being old enough to have experienced our great nation's 200th birthday celebration back in 1976, I am somewhat surprised at small number of celebrations across the country. Back in 76, there was a certain sense of excitement about our nations bicentenial. Patriotic themed events and imagery were everywhere. There was a train containing our national treasures, like the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell, touring the country so that every American would have a chance to see them. There was a fleet of tall (sailed) ships touring port cities. Overall, there was a sense of national pride that permeated everything. It was a truly magical time for our country.

Why Lufkin, Texas is the Perfect Family Destination – Join Us on Our Last Adventure!

On our trip there last year, we had lunch at Ray's Drive In, visited the Naranjo Museum of Natural History, and popped into the History Center in nearby Diboll. This time around, we brought our granddaughter along to share in the fun. The town of Lufkin has many family-friendly locations to enjoy, so many that we actually didn't get to them all in one day, so a return visit will have to be made in the near future.

Railroad Relics: Exploring the Nostalgic Remains of a Once-Bustling Depot in Louisiana

 Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey I have a knack for finding all kinds of pieces of Louisiana railroad history. This past week, I was traveling down Highway 1 from Shreveport towards Natchitoches when I spied a structure off to my right that my keen eye immediately recognized as a railroad depot. My suspicion was soon confirmed as I pulled up in front of the old Texas & Pacific Railroad depot that once served the nearby town of Powhatan. The location also included an old railroad crossing signal, a replica railroad water tower, and an old gas station.

Lost Landmarks: The Heartbreaking Demise of Gibson's in Vernon - My Childhood Memories

Recently, I have been reminiscing about my time in the northern Texas farming town of Vernon from 1974 to 1978. One landmark that stands out in my mind is the Gibson's department store located just off the Highway 287 frontage road. Like many retail and five-and-dime stores of its time (pre-Walmart and Target for you younger folks), Gibson's offered a little bit of everything—clothes, hardware, household goods, and toys.
