Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid: Beaky Buzzard’s Wacky Debut!

After taking a month off, I decided that it was time to resurrect one of my most popular features, entitled Retro Cartoon Rewind. As you can probably guess, this series features many of the classic cartoons that were once shown almost exclusively on network television between 6 and 12 in the morning on Saturdays. Most of us from that generation woke up with eager anticipation, knowing that we were about to enjoy several hours of programming aimed solely for kids. For many, these are some of our most treasured memories.

I thought that it would be great to start off this reboot with everyone's favorite wascally wabbit, Bugs Bunny, in the 1942 classic Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid. This animated short was the product of the famous Warner Bros team of director Bob Clampett and producer Leon Schlesinger. This cartoon is notable because it marks the first appearance of  Bugs' goofy nemesis Beaky Buzzard (aka Killer), who would go on to star in three more cartoons along with dozens of cameos all the way up to the early 2000s. 

So without further ado, here is Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid:

A mother buzzard instructs her children to go out and catch something for dinner—horse, steer, moose, pig, and cow, respectively. Three out of four of them agree with their mother’s food choices and take off right away. However, the mother notices that one of her kids is still sitting with his back turned. Beaky, who is nicknamed "Killer," is painfully shy, easily embarrassed, and a bit slow. Annoyed, his mother kicks him out of the nest with instructions to catch a rabbit.

Beaky spots Bugs Bunny and swoops down to catch him. Bugs, acting like an air traffic controller, "guides" Beaky to the ground, resulting in a crash. After getting up, Beaky is met with the familiar greeting, "Eh, what's up, Doc?" A chase ensues, ending with Bugs crashing down beneath the skeleton of a dead animal. Bugs bursts into tears, thinking he’s dead, but then laughs when he realizes he isn’t. Beaky ends up in a similar predicament. Just as he begins to call for his mother in panic, she arrives.

At first, the mother buzzard thinks Bugs has done something to her son. Bugs pulls Beaky out from the ground, and at that moment, the mother buzzard kisses Bugs, causing him to blush and say, "Nope, nope, nope," just like Beaky.

Save Our Rail History: Join the Fight to Rescue Shreveport's Abandoned Steam Locomotive!

Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey I honestly should change my official title to 'Louisiana Railroad Archeologist' because I have the knack of finding all sorts of abandoned railroad equipment all over the Pelican State. Case in point, last week I was driving around Cross Lake in Shreveport looking for a place to view and photograph the water when I stumbled upon this old steam locomotive just off the road in a closed portion of Ford Park. Wanting to get a good set of photos of the locomotives I snuck in an open gate and weaved my way through twisting roads to the back of the park, dodging crews cutting down all the trees along the way. The old steam locomotive is in bad shape, as is the case with all such locomotives in the state, and it was obvious that the workers at the park had stopped taking care of it long ago.

A Summer Escape: Rediscovering the Serene Beauty of Big Bear Lake

Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey When we lived in California, one of the things that my wife and I loved to do on a Saturday afternoon was to pack up a picnic lunch and travel up into the San Bernardino Mountains for a hike around Big Bear Lake. The mild temperatures were a relief from the hot temperatures down below in the Mojave Desert. The trails that follow the rim of the lake are easy to navigate, and there are plenty of scenic places to stop and enjoy that packed lunch. On this particular outing, my wife and I picked up a bucket of fried chicken on the way to eat.

This Day In History: July 16th, Apollo 11 Begins Trip To The Moon - The First Atomic Bomb Tested - DC Becomes The Nation's Capitol

 From History.com At 9:32 a.m. EDT, Apollo 11 , the first U.S. lunar landing mission, is launched on a historic journey to the surface of the moon. After traveling 240,000 miles in 76 hours, Apollo 11 entered into a lunar orbit on July 19. The next day, at 1:46 p.m., the lunar module Eagle, manned by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, separated from the command module, where a third astronaut, Michael Collins , remained. Two hours later, the Eagle began its descent to the lunar surface, and at 4:18 p.m. the craft touched down on the southwestern edge of the Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong immediately radioed to Mission Control in Houston a famous message, “The Eagle has landed.” At 10:39 p.m., five hours ahead of the original schedule, Armstrong opened the hatch of the lunar module.
