Why Silverwood Lake is the Hidden Gem for Outdoor Family Adventures
Photos and Story By Ken HulseyOur family has cherished our time hiking around Silverwood Lake for years, so I knew a day spent in nature would be a hit for everyone. This beautiful area has been a favorite of ours, offering fantastic opportunities for hiking (just remember to stay on the trails), fishing, boating, and camping. What’s great about Silverwood Lake is its ability to feel serene, even though it's conveniently located near the bustling areas of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Orange County. Unlike nearby Big Bear Lake, which often gets crowded on weekends, Silverwood Lake allows you to enjoy a peaceful day if that’s what you’re after.
Sitting at an elevation of 3,355 feet, Silverwood Lake is the highest reservoir in the State Water Project. The Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, one of the many parks in California, has so much to offer: picnicking spots, scenic hiking trails, swimming beaches, and designated areas for boating, water skiing, and fishing. A highlight for many adventurers is the Pacific Crest Trail, recognized as “the jewel in the crown of America’s scenic trails,” which stretches an impressive 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada through three western states, passing right through our favorite area.
As you might know, photography is one of my passions, and the stunning scenery around Silverwood Lake provides countless beautiful spots to capture. If you’re planning a visit, you can find Silverwood Lake just off Highway 138, about 11 miles east of I-15, or 24 miles northeast of San Bernardino via Highways 18 and 138. The lake is surrounded by 2,400 acres of majestic Douglas firs, Black Oak trees, and breathtaking views of the mountain creeks. With a surface area of 976 acres and 13 miles of shoreline, there's plenty to explore!
If you love fishing, you’re in luck—Silverwood Lake is fantastic for that. Just a heads-up: if you're 16 or older, you'll need a California Department of Fish & Game fishing license to get started. For your convenience, there's a marina that offers a variety of grocery items, ice, snacks, swimming gear, camping supplies, firewood, and even fishing licenses, bait, and tackle. If you’re looking to get out on the water, the marina also has a fleet of motorboat rentals, wet slips, and dry storage options for both overnight visitors and those staying a bit longer.
The park boasts two lovely swimming beaches, four picnic areas (three of which are only accessible by boat), and nearly 100 miles of paved and unpaved trails—six miles of which run along the southern end of the lake. You can also take the time to relax and observe the wonderful wildlife at Silverwood Lake, which attracts a variety of birds such as waterfowl, raptors, songbirds, and occasionally sight the majestic Canadian geese or even a bald eagle.
For those looking to camp, there are 136 tent and RV camping sites available, all of which are non-hookup sites. Every site comes equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and barbecue grill, making it easy to enjoy a cozy evening under the stars. So why not plan a trip to Silverwood Lake? You won’t regret it!
