Railroading in the South: Stunning Images from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas | Railfan Digest

Story and Photos by Ken Hulsey

I've been diligently capturing railroad images across the South over the past three months. My work has taken me through Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, and whenever I spot a train, I make it a point to pull over and get a shot. This is a practice I used to do regularly back in my California days, which has resulted in a sizable collection of images from that region.

Just yesterday, I was in McComb, Mississippi, and managed to snap a great photo of a Canadian National coal train passing a vintage steam locomotive on display. While the front-end power was the main subject, I got lucky with the positioning of the tail-end power, which allowed me to capture the effect I was aiming for. Sometimes, the stars just align!

I shared this latest image on Facebook and was pleased to receive a lot of positive feedback from local railfans. So I've decided to lead off with this shot as I dig into my growing collection of railroad photos from across the South. I hope my fellow enthusiasts will enjoy exploring these images with me.
