Railroading in the South: Stunning Images from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas | Railfan Digest

Story and Photos by Ken Hulsey

I've been diligently capturing railroad images across the South over the past three months. My work has taken me through Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, and whenever I spot a train, I make it a point to pull over and get a shot. This is a practice I used to do regularly back in my California days, which has resulted in a sizable collection of images from that region.

Just yesterday, I was in McComb, Mississippi, and managed to snap a great photo of a Canadian National coal train passing a vintage steam locomotive on display. While the front-end power was the main subject, I got lucky with the positioning of the tail-end power, which allowed me to capture the effect I was aiming for. Sometimes, the stars just align!

I shared this latest image on Facebook and was pleased to receive a lot of positive feedback from local railfans. So I've decided to lead off with this shot as I dig into my growing collection of railroad photos from across the South. I hope my fellow enthusiasts will enjoy exploring these images with me.

Lost But Not Alone: A Journey Through Pain That Led Me Back to God

Written by Ken Hulsey  A relationship with God can be an amazing journey filled with incredible experiences. However, it can also involve hardships and trials meant to foster spiritual growth. I took the image above back in 2011, and it’s hard to believe that it's been 15 years since then. I snapped it with my phone while crossing over the 405 Freeway in Irvine on my journey home from work. At that time, I was working the late shift at a nearby environmental laboratory and didn’t have a car, so I walked everywhere I needed to go.

Suzanne Vega’s 99.9 F°: A Transformative Album for a Generation of Rock Music Fans

The early 1990s were marked by an intensity that resonated through the airwaves, a sonic reflection of a world grappling with societal changes. In that era, while many leaned into angst and rebellion, Suzanne Vega emerged as a unique voice with her 1992 album, 99.9 F°, which showcased a significant evolution in her sound and style, bridging folk and rock with a distinctly experimental twist.
