Unlock the Secrets of the Universe: Experience Magic Under the Stars at the Gordon D. Crowell Observatory in Whittier, California!

Explore the Cosmos: Join the Public Night Program at Gordon D. Crowell Observatory

If you've ever gazed up at the stars and wondered about the secrets of the universe, the Gordon D. Crowell Observatory at Rio Hondo College is an exciting destination for you. Located at 3600 Workman Mill Rd., Whittier, CA, this hidden gem has been welcoming stargazers since 1972, providing an opportunity to explore the night sky through one of Southern California's largest public telescopes.

A Unique Stargazing Experience

The observatory features a remarkable Meade 16-Inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, which allows visitors to observe celestial phenomena in stunning detail. Whether you're an aspiring astronomer or simply curious about the universe, attending the Public Night Program is a perfect way to deepen your knowledge and appreciation of the cosmos. With sessions scheduled on select Friday evenings throughout the year, the observatory offers an incomparable experience to the community, all at no cost.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Public Night Program dates! Sessions take place from 7 to 9 PM on March 6, 13, and 20. As the sun sets and the stars begin to twinkle, you’ll have the chance to gaze up at our celestial neighbors through this powerful telescope. Starting in April, the program will run from 8 to 10 PM on April 3, 17, and 24, followed by sessions on May 8 and 15.

Fun for Everyone

The beauty of the Crowell Observatory's Public Night Program is that it is free and open to everyone. Bring your family, friends, and curiosity as you embark on an adventure into the cosmos. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to guide you through the night sky, navigating constellations and planets while sharing fascinating insights about various celestial bodies.

No prior knowledge of astronomy is necessary, making this an ideal activity for all ages. Whether you're fascinated by the rings of Saturn, the craters on the Moon, or the twinkling wonders of distant galaxies, you're sure to leave with a newfound excitement for the wonders above.

A Legacy of Learning

The observatory is not just a place for star gazing; it is also a tribute to the legacy of Gordon D. Crowell, a beloved chemistry professor at Río Hondo College. The observatory was named in his honor in 1978, reflecting the important role education plays in our understanding of science and the universe. Partially funded by the National Science Foundation, the Crowell Observatory embodies a commitment to making science accessible to the public.

  1. That image you show with the older scope is NOT what Rio Hondo has. As your actual article says, it's a nice modern Meade scope but not what you are implying with that image.

Blessings

Blessings: We often forget that everything in life, including life itself, is a blessing from God. As a man of faith I thank God during my daily prayer for all those blessings He has bestowed upon myself and my family. If you ever want to know just how blessed you really are? Just take a few moments to look around you. There are many people who are having a much harder time getting through their daily life than you are. Take time to pray for those people. Even though it may not seem like it to the casual observer, The Lord is taking care of them as well. We live in a world full of distractions. From cell phones to television our daily lives are filled with things that take our minds off our problems as well as God. I urge you to take the time to look around you. There is a beautiful world out there. Instead of watching another cute cat video, watch some children playing, look at a sunset or if you have the means take a walk in the woods. The miracle of God's creation is all around you and is a much more wonderful show than anything on the television or internet. Take every opportunity to disconnect from technology and grow closer to God through enjoyment of his wonders.
