We’re thrilled to announce the full schedule for the Greenleaf Marketplace this spring! Join us every other Wednesday for an enchanting evening filled with local vendors, delicious food, and the wonderful spirit of community—all under the twinkling lights of Greenleaf Avenue.

We’re kicking things off on February 25 with a special Lunar New Year celebration featuring an exhilarating dragon dance at 6:15 PM! It’s a perfect way to welcome the new season and immerse yourself in cultural festivities.

Rediscovering Lecompte: Vintage Photos and Memories from Central Louisiana’s Past!

 Back in February of 2023, I received a USB drive from my compadre Everett Lueck of the Southern Forest Heritage Museum that contains an enormous amount of information about life in Central Louisiana in the early to mid 20th century. The files that he sent me include documents, newspaper articles, letters, a couple of videos and huge amount of vintage photographs. The bulk of the material focuses on the lumber industry and the railroads that operated in this part of the state.

Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey  Many travelers who drive out of Los Angeles and Orange County through the Inland Empire and Cajon Pass to all points east, including Las Vegas, on Interstate 15 don't realize that there are several miles of the old Route 66 that still exist a mere hundred or so yards away.  The old highway that once served as the only road through the pass is now only taken by motorists who want to try and avoid traffic congestion due to accidents or weekend travelers trying to get to Sin City or other desert recreation areas.

 The gunfight is a staple of every Western television show, movie, and pulp novel. If you watched classic TV series like The Rifleman, Gunsmoke, and Wagon Train, you know it was the climactic scene in nearly every episode. The narratives of these popular shows and films, featuring legends such as John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Clint Eastwood, portray the Old West as being filled with hired guns, trigger-happy outlaws seeking revenge, and fighters looking for a brawl. It creates tension, doesn't it? Picture a showdown in a deserted street, guns blazing as two men face off in a winner-takes-all battle to the death. The fastest draw usually emerges victorious, that being most often the town marshal or the good-looking hero of the story.

Toys By Roy - Winrock Center Mall - Albuquerque, New Mexico - A Trip Down Memory Lane

If you grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico , during the 60s, 70s, or 80s, you likely have fond memories of Toys By Roy. The store was easily recognizable thanks to the large rocking horse logo on its front. In 1961, Roy Ater opened his first Toys By Roy in the brand-new Winrock Center Mall, which was marketed as ‘the largest in the Southwest.’ Ater’s toy store quickly became one of the mall's first and most successful retailers. Over the following years, Toys By Roy expanded into a successful franchise with 34 locations across 9 states.

Rediscovering Smith's Landing: The Story of Louisiana's First Train Station and Its Legacy

Today, I want to share the story of the first railroad built in central Louisiana. Known as the Red River Railroad , or sometimes the Ralph Smith Smith Railroad , this was the very first railroad constructed west of the Mississippi River. It was a simple and roughly built line that transported cotton and other goods that were brought in by barges on Bayou Boeuf .   The place where this railroad began is called Smith’s Landing , and the remaining building in the town of Lecompte is recognized as the first train station built west of the Mississippi. The tracks ran from Lecompte to the banks of the Red River in Alexandria , but much of this route has been lost to time. During the Civil War , Union soldiers tore up the tracks to create a levee, and because of that, we don’t know exactly where the railroad used to go. Louisiana Through My Lens | Getting Close To God and Nature | Fort Buhlow Recreation Area in Pineville

Photos and Story By Ken Hulsey Last week, I spent a couple of days exploring the Fort Buhlow Recreation Area in Pineville, Louisiana. This park is truly a hidden gem in the central part of the state. It covers 100 acres, nestled between Lake Buhlow and the Red River. The park features a championship-caliber disc golf course, 2- and 3-mile hiking trails, two playgrounds, numerous picnic areas, and a boat launch on the river. It is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with family.
