Chasing Sunrises: A Photographer's Journey Through the Heart of Louisiana

There is one thing you can always count on in Louisiana: a beautiful sunrise. Since I had the day off, I decided to wake up early and venture out with my camera to capture some of the stunning scenery here in Central Louisiana. I’ve been promising myself for almost a year that I would spend some time getting back into my photography, and a holiday from work provided the perfect opportunity.


I traveled south of my home to an area known as Meeker. Once, Meeker was the site of a small pioneer town, but all that remains now is an abandoned sugar mill. Nevertheless, the area offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Cenla. The morning light truly brought out amazing hues in the native foliage, which were quite striking. Overall, it was a magical opportunity to enjoy Louisiana's beauty and capture it through the lens of my camera.

Written By Ken Hulsey With Halloween quickly approaching, I wanted to share a little ghost story from my past. Back in the 1980s, I lived in Albuquerque, in a subdivision known as Heritage Hills. When my family moved in during the late 1970s, this area was brand new. In fact, these were the only homes located on the furthest north side of the city. Beyond our subdivision, there was nothing but open desert, with dirt roads and a few scattered structures. This area remained undeveloped for quite some time.

 If you grew up in the 1970s, you probably have great memories of waking up early on Saturday mornings, watching classic cartoons while enjoying a bowl of Cap'n Crunch. Join me as we take a trip down memory lane and see how many of these beloved cartoons you can recall! Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels (ABC)(1977 - 80) "Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels follows the exciting mystery-solving escapades of the Teen Angels—Brenda, Dee Dee, and Taffy—alongside their prehistoric friend, Captain Caveman (or Cavey).  For this installment of Retro Cartoon Rewind, I decided to feature a selection of my favorite cartoon shorts featuring Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. If you’re like me, you probably grew up watching these cartoons, and they undoubtedly influenced your childhood. I consider myself to be an equal blend of the Wascally Wabbit and the Screwball Duck, both mentally and emotionally, which probably explains a lot of things—just ask my friends and relatives! Aside from the psychiatrist bills, these wonderful cartoons still make me laugh out loud and bring back so many fond memories.

Ghosts of the Rails: The Abandoned Relics at Ouachita Railroad in Arkansas

Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey This past week I was granted special permission to photograph the Ouachita Railroad facilities in El Dorado, Arkansas . The Ouachita is a small railroad that switches cars from a chemical plant south of town and exchanges them with the Union Pacific . The railroad used to operate over former Rock Island Railroad trackage into northern Louisiana through the nearby town of Junction City. In fact, the facilities that the Ouachita now occupy once belonged to the Rock Island.
