Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit 

 Scripture Reading: Matthew 5 

 Today when we hear that someone is "blessed," we often think of a comfortable lifestyle, good health and a successful job. But Jesus said that those who are "poor in spirit" are blessed. The New Testament word for poor means a beggar who is totally dependent upon another for survival. Therefore, to be "poor in spirit" is to be totally dependent upon another for spiritual well-being. 

 If we turn this around, we realize that the cursed are those who are rich in self-sufficiency. When we can take care of ourselves and control our situations, we're living in a different kingdom. 

 When God puts you in a situation that you have no power to fix, He's doing you a favor because He's making a way for His Kingdom to come in. If you find yourself in this place, you'll know you're poor in spirit as thanksgiving replaces your complaining.

If you grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico , during the 60s, 70s, or 80s, you likely have fond memories of Toys By Roy. The store was easily recognizable thanks to the large rocking horse logo on its front. Rediscovering Lecompte: Vintage Photos and Memories from Central Louisiana’s Past!

 Back in February of 2023, I received a USB drive from my compadre Everett Lueck of the Southern Forest Heritage Museum that contains an enormous amount of information about life in Central Louisiana in the early to mid 20th century. The files that he sent me include documents, newspaper articles, letters, a couple of videos and huge amount of vintage photographs. The bulk of the material focuses on the lumber industry and the railroads that operated in this part of the state.

This past week, I was traveling down Highway 1 from Shreveport towards Natchitoches when I spied a structure off to my right that my keen eye immediately recognized as a railroad depot. My suspicion was soon confirmed as I pulled up in front of the old Texas & Pacific Railroad depot that once served the nearby town of Powhatan. The location also included an old railroad crossing signal, a replica railroad water tower, and an old gas station.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing about my days in the Southwest over the past couple of months. In my previous posts, I've focused a lot on my experiences in California , New Mexico , and, to some extent, Texas . However, I feel bad for neglecting the great state of Arizona . I often referred to it as "the great land in between" the states I once called home. Although I never lived there, I spent a significant amount of time traveling down the famous Route 66 and later Interstate 40 through Arizona. I have wonderful memories of looking out the window, eating at roadside diners, and stopping at countless tourist traps during family summer vacations.
