Journey to the New World: How 15 Families from the Canary Islands Shaped Texas History!

**The Canary Islanders: A Pivotal Chapter in Texas History**

On this day in 1729, a significant proposal was made by the Marqués de Aguayo that would have a profound impact on the future of Texas. He urged the King of Spain to facilitate the transportation of 400 families from the Canary Islands, Galicia, or Havana with the goal of populating the province of Texas. This bold initiative marked the beginning of what would become a vital chapter in the story of Texas.

Fast forward to March 9, 1731, and we see the arrival of the first Canarian settlers. These fifteen families would go on to become the very foundation of the villa of San Fernando de Béxar, which holds the distinction of being the first regularly organized civil government in Texas. This establishment was not merely a settlement; it was the birth of an organized community that would influence the region's cultural and social fabric for generations.

The legacy of these Canary Island colonists lives on today, as many of the old families of San Antonio can trace their roots back to these pioneering immigrants. Their contributions to the economic, cultural, and political development of Texas are celebrated and acknowledged, helping to shape the identity of one of the largest states in the U.S.

The story of the Canary Islanders is a reminder of the resilience and tenacity of those who ventured into new territories in search of a better life. It illustrates how a diverse group of individuals and cultures can come together to create a vibrant and thriving community.

As we reflect on this historical event, let us remember the rich tapestry of Texas history that involves various cultures and people who have influenced its development. The Canary Islanders are just one crucial piece of that puzzle, showcasing the deep-rooted heritage that continues to define Texas today.

Blessings

Blessings: We often forget that everything in life, including life itself, is a blessing from God. As a man of faith I thank God during my daily prayer for all those blessings He has bestowed upon myself and my family. If you ever want to know just how blessed you really are? Just take a few moments to look around you. There are many people who are having a much harder time getting through their daily life than you are. Take time to pray for those people. Even though it may not seem like it to the casual observer, The Lord is taking care of them as well. We live in a world full of distractions. From cell phones to television our daily lives are filled with things that take our minds off our problems as well as God. I urge you to take the time to look around you. There is a beautiful world out there. Instead of watching another cute cat video, watch some children playing, look at a sunset or if you have the means take a walk in the woods. The miracle of God's creation is all around you and is a much more wonderful show than anything on the television or internet. Take every opportunity to disconnect from technology and grow closer to God through enjoyment of his wonders.
