Spiritual Revival in Central Louisiana - Journey Church Pineville | Joy in Trials: The Secret to Triumph Living

Photo and Story by Ken Hulsey

In the modern Christian church, two prominent preaching styles prevail. The first style, adopted by many popular megachurches, portrays Christian life as an existence of sunshine, rainbows, and joyful feelings. In contrast, the other style focuses on the hard truths about a life devoted to serving Jesus Christ. It is this latter, no-nonsense approach that Pastor James W. Greer and his team at Journey Church in Pineville embrace.

The messages preached from Journey's pulpit every Sunday are straightforward sermons filled with spiritual truths applicable to real-life situations. Journey Church has two guiding mottos: "You Can't Do Life Alone" and "Helping Those Far From Christ Grow Closer To Christ." Pastor Greer understands his congregation faces genuine problems and suffering, so he speaks honestly about these issues and teaches practical spiritual principles to help people cope.

This message may not always be pleasant, but Journey's members find it resonates deeply. The path to blessings and joy, the pastor teaches, comes through spiritual discipline, service, surrender to Christ, and sometimes even trials. While this is not the message most Christians want to hear, it draws Journey's attendees week after week, seeking honesty in a world of "fake news, political propaganda, and religious dogma."

Visitors to Journey remark on the church's unique, no-nonsense approach, which differs from the traditional churches they're accustomed to. This message's power is evident in the high number of first-time visitors who give their lives to Christ and get baptized the following Sunday. In 2021, Journey Church baptized more people than any other church in Louisiana, a source of genuine joy for Pastor Greer. There is no doubt that God is doing something extraordinary within the walls of this church, as lives are being changed, addictions overcome, and people are growing closer to Christ.

Pastor James Greer's inspiring message, "Joy in Trials: The Secret to Triumph Living," is a beacon of hope for anyone navigating life's challenges. Drawing from the wisdom of the Book of James, Pastor Greer shares profound insights on how we can not only endure hardships, but actually grow and thrive through them. He reminds us that trials are not obstacles to our joy, but rather opportunities to deepen our faith and strengthen our character. With warmth and clarity, Pastor Greer unpacks the biblical principles of perseverance, obedience, and intimacy with God, showing how they work together to produce a life of unshakable joy. Through relatable stories and practical applications, he equips us with the tools we need to face any trial with confidence and grace. Whether you're struggling with health issues, financial strain, relational conflicts, or any other hardship, Pastor Greer's message will encourage you to press on, trusting that God is using your trials to shape you into the triumphant overcomer He created you to be. Get ready to discover the secret to living a life of joy, no matter what challenges come your way!

Perseverance and obedience go hand-in-hand. Learning how to find joy in the midst of trials is one of the fastest and wisest ways to grow as a Christian. (James 1:2, NIV) God can use difficulties or discipline to refine our character and deepen our faith. Trials focus on testing, training, and strengthening our trust in Him. God's purpose is to build perseverance, leading to spiritual maturity and completeness in Christ. Discipline, on the other hand, focuses more on correction and instruction.

Without facing trials, we would not fully understand the depth of true joy. We have to learn to be content without certain circumstances before we can experience lasting joy in God's provision. True happiness comes not from possessions, but from a deepening relationship with Jesus. Lasting joy flows from seeking Him daily and aligning our hearts with His will, not from temporary satisfaction. (Matthew 6:19-20, NIV)

From Godzilla to Star Wars: A Comic Book Journey Through the Pages of My Childhood

Written By Ken Hulsey As most of you know, I am a certified comic book enthusiast. I have been collecting comic books as a hobby since the late 1970s and have been reading them since I was a child. Like many kids of my generation, I was drawn to titles featuring my favorite cartoon characters such as The Flintstones , Bugs Bunny , and Yogi Bear . My mother would buy them for me in packs at the Pick N Save, which helped me build quite a collection. While I often got some Richie Rich and Little Lulu comics that I didn't particularly care for, back then, you learned to take the good with the bad.

Unraveling the Mystery: The Glowing Green Fireballs that Haunted New Mexico—Are They Alien Probes or a Government Secret?

Story By Ken Hulsey As a rational person, I can explain away most of the strange occurrences I experienced during my teenage years in Albuquerque. However, one incident still puzzles me to this day. In August 1980, my best friend, my family, and I witnessed a large, glowing green orb hovering motionless in the night sky directly over the city for over an hour before it disappeared.

Overcoming Fear: How Tithing Transformed My Finances and Strengthened My Relationship with God

The Journey of Faith: Embracing Challenges and Growing in Spiritual Maturity Taking that first step into an act of faith can often feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to something like tithing. For many, the idea of giving away 10% of their income can stir up feelings of reluctance and fear. I was one of those individuals, apprehensive and uncertain about the process. Yet, it was precisely this struggle that led me to a deeper understanding of faith and dependence on God.

Shake It Off: When Life Bites Back, God Is Still Using You | Ascend with Pastor Steve

In this message, we explore the powerful story of Paul’s shipwreck in Acts 26–28 and his unexpected experience on the island of Malta, where survival turned into attack and pain transformed into purpose. Even though we know that Sunday came and Jesus conquered death, many of us still live as if it’s Friday—caught in confusion, pain, and unanswered questions. But what if your current struggle isn’t a setback but rather a divine assignment?

Louisiana Through My Lens | Getting Close To God and Nature | Fort Buhlow Recreation Area in Pineville

Photos and Story By Ken Hulsey Last week, I spent a couple of days exploring the Fort Buhlow Recreation Area in Pineville, Louisiana. This park is truly a hidden gem in the central part of the state. It covers 100 acres, nestled between Lake Buhlow and the Red River. The park features a championship-caliber disc golf course, 2- and 3-mile hiking trails, two playgrounds, numerous picnic areas, and a boat launch on the river. It is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with family.

Just A Thought From Pastor Steve Smothermon: With All Your Heart

The Bible teaches us to trust in the Lord with all of our hearts, and lean not on our own understanding. Highest relationship: So, what does it mean to trust God, to trust someone else? Trust is the highest relationship with others. It means to have confidence in, to be secure, to feel safe. It means you believe what they tell you. Worldly trust: In our society, it is hard to fully trust anyone or anything. Marketers are trying to get us to trust in their products. Politicians are trying to get us to trust them enough to vote for them. Spouses want to be trusted. Biblical trust: The Bible teaches us not to trust in man. Why? People will disappoint you; they will let you down. But God will never disappoint or let you down. Jeremiah 17:5 — This is what the Lord says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord.” So, we are not to put our trust in people, but in God. Now we do trust people. We have to at ti...

Learning to Wait God's Way

David was the anointed king of Israel, but before he could enjoy the realization of God's promises, he had to go through a season of testing and waiting. During this time, he was forced to hide out in caves and literally run for his life. King Saul, who was bent on David's destruction, continually hunted for him. Perhaps the Lord has given you a promise through His Word. You are ready to see it unfold, but it hasn't happened yet. Though you have waited, it seems that there is no hope on the horizon. Remember, God's timing is perfect. He knows what you need, when you need it. He knows that if we are going to learn how to walk with Him in the daylight or the good times, we must learn first to trust Him in times of darkness. At some point, each of us has waited for God's promises to come. David may have wondered when the Lord would open the door to blessing. However, he never allowed his thoughts to turn to doubts. In fact, in Psalm 18:17, 19, he praises God for...
