The Flat Earth Conspiracy: Separating Fact from Fiction in Our Understanding of the Globe

Have you ever wondered if the world is really a globe spinning through space? Well, it turns out there's a lot of evidence that points to the Earth actually being flat! Many people who have looked into it believe that the North Pole sits at the center, with all the continents spread out around it, floating in a giant pond. Antarctica forms a massive ice wall that encircles the outer edge, holding in the oceans. And get this - the whole flat earth is covered by an enormous dome! Wild, right?

The notion of a flat Earth, the perception that our planet exists as a flat, circular, or square-shaped disk, persisted in the ancient world until empirical observations revealed Earth's true spherical or ellipsoidal shape. However, in modern times, the idea of a flat Earth has been revived and promoted on social media, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.

Across the annals of ancient civilizations worldwide, different descriptions of a flat Earth can be found. For example, ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian records depict the world as a disk in the ocean with the heavens arching above it. An Iraqi tablet from 1000 BCE shows Babylon at the center of a flat disk, and the Greek philosopher Anaximander (610-546 BCE) perceived Earth as a flat disk atop a cylinder. In Norse cosmology, Earth's flat plane is encircled by an ocean, with a central world tree or pillar. Some Indian sacred texts describe the planet as a series of stacked flat disks, while others envision it as a horizontal wheel set on a vertical axle. Even in China, the Earth was described as flat and square until the 17th century, until Western science provided evidence of its spherical nature.

The notion of a flat Earth seems to have an enduring hold on the human imagination. In the 1830s, a British commune led by writer Samuel Birley Rowbotham revived the concept as a backlash against rapid scientific progress, believing Earth was a circular disk with a central North Pole and an ice wall surrounding the edges. The modern Flat Earth Society emerged more modestly in the 1950s, but gained worldwide influence in the early 2000s due to the rise of the internet and social media. Some of the society's models echo ancient views of Earth as a disk with a rotating star dome, while others claim the Sun and Moon are only 50 km in diameter, circling the disk at a height of 5,500 km. Others envision a world hemmed in by an infinite Antarctica or reject conventional gravity, claiming Earth accelerates upward to create the illusion of gravity.

Breaking it all down:

Flat Earth believers cite several key reasons to support their claim that the Earth is flat rather than spherical. The primary belief is that the Earth is a flat, disc-shaped object, and some adhere to specific flat-Earth models, such as the Azimuthal Equidistant Projection, to explain the layout of continents and oceans. Many Flat Earthers argue that Antarctica is not a continent but rather a giant ice wall encircling the flat Earth, preventing water from falling off the edge.

Some Flat Earthers reject the concept of gravity as understood by mainstream science, proposing alternative explanations like the Earth constantly accelerating upward. They often believe that space agencies, especially NASA, are engaged in a conspiracy to conceal the true nature of our planet. Flat Earthers may question space-related images and videos, claiming they are manipulated to maintain the illusion of a spherical Earth.

Flat Earthers point to the apparent lack of observable curvature, especially over long distances, as evidence supporting a flat Earth model. They argue the horizon always appears flat, and the absence of a noticeable curve backs up the notion of a plane Earth. Some even reject the existence of outer space altogether, asserting it is simply a dome or firmament above the flat plane.

Other reasons cited by Flat Earthers include the belief that water always finds a level surface, inconsistent with the curvature expected on a spherical Earth, as well as the idea that the Sun and Moon move in a circular motion above the flat plane, creating day and night cycles. Flat Earthers may also contend that space travel is impossible and all claims of human space exploration are fabricated.

Ultimately, Flat Earthers tend to prioritize personal observation and anecdotal evidence over scientific consensus, arguing that what they see with their own eyes is more reliable than mainstream scientific explanations.

The flat Earth conspiracy theory relies on perceived flaws in mainstream science while ignoring major problems with its own claims. Flat Earth models fail to explain the wide range of natural phenomena that are well accounted for by the modern scientific understanding of the globe and its place in our solar system. Flattening the Earth would severely distort the shapes and relative distances of oceans and continents. Furthermore, the night sky seen from the Southern Hemisphere is markedly different from that observed in the Northern Hemisphere, which is only possible on a spherical Earth.

The spherical nature of the Earth has been recognized for thousands of years. Ancient observations, such as ships' hulls disappearing below the horizon before their sails, provided clear evidence of the Earth's curvature. By the time of the ancient Greek philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, the consensus was that the Earth must be a sphere. Subsequent developments, from Eratosthenes' accurate calculation of the Earth's circumference to the consistent pull of gravity, have only reinforced this understanding.

The overwhelming evidence for a spherical Earth includes countless images and videos from space, as well as the personal experiences of astronauts who have seen the Earth's curvature from orbit. Dismissing this evidence would require a vast, worldwide conspiracy to fake decades of space exploration, as well as the rejection of multiple scientific disciplines. In contrast, the flat Earth theory lacks any scientific support and relies solely on religious faith, intuition, or humor rather than evidence. Despite its recent prominence, the flat Earth theory does nothing to change the simple fact that has been conclusively proven for centuries: we live on the surface of a globe.

Chasing Shadows of the Past: A Railroad Adventure with Kansas City Southern's Vintage F-Series Locomotives

Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey In April 2022, I received a tip from a fellow railfan on Facebook that the Kansas City Southern Executive Train would be in Baton Rouge . To my excitement, I spotted a set of vintage FP9/F9B diesel locomotives resting on a bridge over the 110 freeway while driving toward downtown. My enthusiasm for the F-series locomotives compelled me to navigate some of Louisiana's poorly designed streets (and that’s saying something) to get close to the railyard. I made my way through what felt like a jungle that belonged somewhere in Borneo, only to climb a steep hill to reach the railyard.

Just a Thought: Designed by God | Pastor Steve Smothermon

Designed by God Psalm 139 is a profound reminder of God's intimate knowledge and omnipresence in our lives. The psalm opens with a declaration of God's deep knowledge of the individual: "O Lord, you have searched me and known me." This knowledge is not just superficial awareness, but a profound, penetrating understanding of all our ways. The psalmist acknowledges that before a word is on our tongues, God knows it completely. This reveals a God who is not distant or disinterested but is deeply engaged with the intricacies of our lives, understanding our thoughts and actions better than we understand them ourselves.
